So I know I said I was going to document the process of building a site but I’ve been too busy really to do that, besides a few people are doing that already, here and here.

I’ve been busy developing a system for myself to use to create affiliate web shops, whatever you want to call it, that integrates with WordPress, now I already use Price Tapestry alongside WordPress and have a few domains using Storeburst but I wanted something a bit more really.

Wordpress Affiliate Shop ScriptI like the ease of Storeburst but I don’t like the front end so much or the lack of content ability, I love WordPress so it was obvious to me what I had to do, get it made!

So here it is, my demo site for my system Compare Sunglasses, and here’s a list of what I can do with it:
    - Upload Datafeeds
    - Set filters on the datafeeds to include/exclude keywords on Product Name/Description/Category
    - Search and Replace words on the Product Name/Description/Category
    - Menu can be by default merchant categories or bespoke menu within wordpress using a keyword
    - Homepage categories can be defined and shows random products for that category
    - Search results are viewable by relevance, price low-high, high-low, 16/32/48 per page
    - If product names match they will ‘compare’ in a table, it also shows a little thumbnail because for things like Polo Shirts the same thing can be listed loads but in different colours so makes it easy to distinguish the difference in products
    - If a voucher code is present for that merchant then it will appear on the product page
    - If a voucher code is present for a merchant it will display on the homepage with a link to view all products for that merchant
    - Category description can be added for each category

I need to tinker with the on-page SEO functions and then all that’s needed is fresh content to be added via wordpress posts! :)

I’ve also been getting hold of some new domains, it’s hard to stop buying them to be honest, some that I got are Volcanoes, isleofwighthotels.org.uk and lasvegashotels.org.uk, it’s also getting frustrating not developing them all, there’s just no time and when I look at all my domains for ones to sell I can’t bring myself to get rid of any as I see potential in them all :S

Just wanted to say another quick thanks to Red Letter Days for the Q2 incentive prize I received of a Logic iSTATION iPhone/iPod Dock.

The great thing with Red Letter Days is you don’t even need to make that many sales to receive a prize, no matter how small it’s always nice to receive something for any affiliate efforts, on top of the nice commissions already!

I’m sure most people know this already but I’m going to have my own rant.

I transferred a few domains I’d bought into 1&1, every single one had a ‘domain registration error; next to them in my account, the DNS was still pointing to the previous host, I had requested the DNS was changed to 1&1 upon transfer but this didn’t happen, I reset the DNS to point to 1&1 and waited 48 hours and still it wasn’t pointing to 1&1.

A few emails went back and forward with 1&1 support, basically them telling me to do what I had already done despite me telling them I’d done exactly that in my first email to them, eventually they told me they had to escalate it to another department, I phoned support and asked to speak to that department and was told I could only email them, I emailed them many many times with no reply, that was the last I heard of it, that was in January 2011.

To fix this I basically had to cancel the domains from my contract and request them again, but this involved me having to change the registrar at Nominet as cancelling them made them have no registrar assigned, so £12 just to get them to point to the right place, after I’d already paid the £12 to have them transferred to my name at Nominet in the first place!

Recently I transferred another two domains in to 1&1 and have had the exact same problem, first line support reply stating they can’t see any problem and to send screenshots, so send screenshots showing the error message next to my domain and also a screenshot showing no DNS settings, I mean how bloody thick can they be that they can’t see this? They also tell me to check the whois records of a .org.uk at Internic?!

So basically after me asking them if they actually read my emails they have escalated it to the non existent department, whom I don’t expect to get back to me anytime this century so I’m left again with having to pay another £12 just to be able to use my domains, I’m thinking of sending them an invoice for these £12′s that keep adding up and then issuing county court papers when they don’t pay them!

So I suppose this is a post to ask for recommendations on hosting providers, with over 200 domains it’s a process I’m not looking forward to doing though.

Just recently I have been setting up some affiliate sites for other people (see here) , in the last four weeks, two of which I spent in Poland, I have made four sites and I’m working on 2 more now, but this then made me think “DO YOUR OWN” to myself, after all I have plenty of domains sat there waiting to be developed.

So this is what I’m going to do, I am also going to pick one, possibly foodmixers.org.uk and document the whole process of building it, getting it into the Search Engines, and then hopefully making some cash on it!

In April I attended an SEO Course at the excellent SEO Junkies, I think I’ve got a decent grasp of on page SEO and wanted to get more insight into Link Building, I had been using profile linking a lot and it worked but I wanted to know how to do the kind of Link Building you might do if Argos came knocking on the door, the course was great, it confirmed the stuff I already knew and gave an insight into a few other bits of SEO, when you’re at home working, learning things by yourself, you never know if what you know is right, so it was good to confirm some of that knowledge with people who do it succesfully every day for major clients.

As I am now working 3 days a week in my main job, I have more time to work on the affiliate sites I have and it would be nice to at least double the amount I make at the moment , fingers crossed!

I will start the ‘Building a Niche Affiliate Site’ series very shortly :)

Yesterday I was trying to figure out, find a plugin, that would enable me to add meta information to wordpress categories, I use All-in-one-seo so wanted something to work along side this and not have to install another SEO plugin, this took longer than I thought it would as I was messing about trying to get Category Meta Plugin to work without success and there was no clear information or successful installs from my Google search to help me with this.

Then I came across Category SEO Meta Tags, it was exactly what I had been looking for and was so simple to install, best of all it works perfectly, so hopefully this post will help anyone else in the same situation and save them time trying to find the right plugin.
